Honey Granny

It was her second visit to the clinic in Kg. Tunku for a slight sore throat.

After getting her tonsils peered at, Mum (or Tokmi to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren) told her pretty 40-something doctor "Dr, saya ada baca dalam suatu buku lama yang saya terjumpa, ni pasal makan honey, dia kata umur 40 tu dah masuk tahap tua dah..."

Dr said "Betul tu... saya pun dah kena pakai reading glasses".

Mum continues "Dr dengar ler, macam saya ni 83 tahun buku tu kata... dah tahap TERLALU TUA.... hahahaha... patutlah lambat nak sembuh perit tekak ni.... dah TERLALU TUA..."

Adoiiii so cute, baru Tokmi perasan?

She advised the pretty doctor "Dr, buku tu kata honey is very good to maintain your health and stay young"

"Yer lah, makan honey tu kan sunnah nabi..."figs and dates as well"

" Dr  kena minum honey everyday you know, the good one - not the G**NT brand. Itu ada gula dalamnya. Satu sudu honey dalam air suam - jangan guna air panas, nanti hilang khasiatnya"

"  yer ker aunty? ermmm saya beri aunty antibiotik jenis lain lah kali ni OK?. Telan 1 biji dua kali sehari lepas makan. Ni kalau perut kosong boleh gastrik"

"Even though I am TERLALU TUA Dr, Alhamdulillah enjin perut ok dan jalan lawas... lutut saja yang masalah, sujud kena berkerusi dah"

"  Isn't anyone, your grandchildren, staying with you?

"  Mana diorang nak Dr, diorang kata rumah Tokmi tak ada komputer... apa lagi tu... internet? But I'm OK, bila maid tak ada baru cucu temankan atau saya lari rumah anak-anak"

Dr says "You know aunty, I told my husband you inspire me very much... I want to be like you as I grow older, be independent, cook my own meals"

So do I, as a matter of fact.

Semoga Tokmi sihat selalu..

Hmmm... If 40-something is tua, and 80-something is terlalu tua, that makes 50-something  SANGAT TUA?

I'M GOING OUT TO GET SOME HONEY!

If you don't believe Tokmi, pleas read this (from http://www.organicfacts.net/organic-animal-products/organic-honey/health-benefits-of-honey.html):

Known as Honig in German, Miele in Italian, Shahad in Hindi, Miel in French, Miel in Spanish, Mel in Portuguese, мед in Russian, Honing in Dutch, and μελι in Greek, there is hardly any region in the world where honey is not cherished.

What makes honey so popular? It is the ease with which it can be consumed. One can eat honey directly, put it on bread like a jam, mix it with juice or any drink instead of sugar, or mix it with warm water, lime juice, cinnamon and other herbs to make a medicine. It is savored by all due to its taste as well as health benefits.

The health benefits of honey include the following:

Sweetener: Sugar can be substituted with honey in many food and drinks. Honey contains about 69% glucose and fructose enabling it to be used as a sweetener.

Energy Source: Honey is also used by many as a source of energy as it provides about 64 calories per tablespoon. One tablespoon of sugar will give you about 50 calories. Further the sugars in honey can be easily converted into glucose by even the most sensitive stomachs. Hence it is very easy to digest honey.

Weight Loss: Though honey has more calories than sugar, honey when consumed with warm water helps in digesting the fat stored in your body. Similarly honey and lemon juice and honey and cinnamon help in reducing weight.

Improving Athletic Performance: Recent research has shown that honey is an excellent ergogenic aid and helps in boosting the performance of athletes. Honey facilitates in maintaining blood sugar levels, muscle recuperation and glycogen restoration after a workout.

Source of Vitamins and Minerals: Honey contains a variety of vitamins and minerals. The vitamin and mineral content of honey depends on the type of flowers used for apiculture.

Antibacterial and Antifungal Properties: Honey has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and hence it can be used as a natural antiseptic.

Antioxidants: Honey contains nutraceuticals, which are effective in removing free radicals from our body. As a result, our body immunity is improved.

Skin Care with Milk and Honey: Milk and honey are often served together as both these ingredients help in getting a smooth soothing skin. Hence consuming milk and honey daily in the morning is a common practice in many countries.

Honey in Wound Management
Significant research is being carried out to study the benefits of honey in treating wounds. Nursing Standard provides some of these benefits in the document - The benefits of honey in wound management. These have been given below:
  • Honey possesses antimicrobial properties.
  • It helps in promoting autolytic debridement.
  • It deodorizes malodorous wounds.
  • It speeds up the healing process by stimulating wound tissues.
  • It helps in initiating the healing process in dormant wounds.
  • Honey also helps in promoting moist wound healing.
The healing powers of honey are not hyped. The Waikato Honey Research Unit provides details about the world-wide research that is being carried out on the benefits of honey in medicine. Further, BBC reported in July, 2006 that doctors at the Christie Hospital in Didsbury, Manchester are planning to use honey for faster recovery of cancer patients after surgery. Such research will provide scientific evidence to the so-called beliefs held by honey lovers all over the world and help in propagating benefits of honey to more people.

Now that you know the benefits of honey, how do you eat it? You can eat it raw, add it it in water and different beverages and you can add it in several recipes also.

Salam Zendra..
Eh macam nasihat Loktor plak you punyer entry kali ini..
My late Father who lived on to be 95 yrs old.. consumed segelas air di campur honey sesudu.. twice daily.. dari umur 70+ sampai dia hampir nak habis umur..
But then again ..itu kerana amalan harian dia..
kalau kita dah ada kencing manis..kena consult the doctor first before consuming honey.. nanti jadi hal lain plak..
Just my 2 sen opinion..

Awww Zen, Tokmi is my kind of woman lah. So very true Honey is great for u, I have 2 teaspoon in hot camomile tea every night, very soothing & calming effect for a pleasant good night sleep. Maybe next time I’ll try ‘jangan guna air panas’, that could explain why I feel so ‘hot’ in the middle of the night, sometimes…kakaka.

Here’s my weekend dedication to Tokmi, very keroncong beat, bet she’ll love it;

Sugar for my Honey

Have a lovely weekend to u all.

Cheers,
Tommy Forever YOUNG

P/S – I’m not gonna add many other ‘exotic’ uses for HONEY not listed on this post of yours….kakaka, I shall leave them to your imaginations. Now u know why I'm so Sweeeeeeeeet :)

Wassalam Wan, re your late father, it goes to show it's never too late to start on the honey. And yes diabetics need to consult their doctors, thanks for the reminder ;)

Zendra-Maria said...

Hey Honeykay, cari raw honey from the jungle - they say that's the best. And there's a simple test you can apply to ascertain it's purity(meaning no sugar or other honeys added) which for the moment has left the building hehe. Go for the madu then - bertambah workayholic lah dikau :D

PS Tokmi suka dipuji, thanks

zee, a sweet entry in more ways than one, this!

too bad honey is not for me. i can only stand the treacly stuff once in a while. if that means i won't be able to decelerate aging, guess i will have to "live" with it. ;D

btw, your mom sounds a real honey, zee. i want to know how she maintains that young and playful spirit. if i were to have longevity that's how i'd like to be because where's the fun of living to a ripe old age as a bitter curmudgeon kan?

Ayub, thanks for the testimony - what honey did you use? from hutan belantara Miri ke?

Wow you can imagine Tokmi's lenggok tuturan too - well that's my byline: ACCURACY! hahaha

See you soon, insya Allah...

Zendra-Maria said...

my dear mekyam, so i had to google this big word "curmudgeon"

it came out with "a crusty irascible cantankerous old person full of stubborn ideas"

gosh i don't think you'll want to become mek-curmud and since you don't like honey I'm sure those dark french chilli-laced chocs you bought in Paris(?) will work just fine for you ;)

thanks for teaching me a new word i too shouldn't want to become...

Zendra-Maria said...

Alahai Capt your song is on my FB wall... Pujuk, Tok, pujuk.....

mekyam said...

lol @ "mekgcurmud"! :D

zee, wld you know i went into a fit-2b-certified hypermode after those chili-laced chocs.

thurs, i kept an appt i cld 'ave avoided at bryant park to join a pal doing a tour of the ny public lib [reads mini paradise], after which i rushed to chinatown for a doz packets of those frozen cholesterol-free puffy parathas [reads roti canai] b4 heading home. then at midnite i decided to make a pot of chicken curry to go with the parathas.

yesterday, i traipsed across midtown from columbus circle to 1st ave, stopping at all the home-furnishings and housewares stores along the way, fr william sonoma to c&b to pottery barn to bl&t. broke strides only to play with one of the many ipads at macstore. ended that unexplainable miles and miles of walking with a bungee-cord backrest and 3-in-1 fancy-schmancy swiss-made grater i have no use for.

i'm still bugeyed high but at home now because my leg muscles have spasmed and i can't find my jar of blue emu to give them relief. meanwhile my spirit is chafing because i'd have done better to apply my hypermode to tackling the mountain of stuffs in my in-tray and didn't, and it's a lovely day out and i'm stuck indoors.

h, who slumbered away his lag away while i did the madwoman thang, has left for central park on his bike to take advantage of this sky-blue light-breeze day.

arrrrgh, i'm going to end up a curmud, fersure!

Zendra-Maria said...

Oldstock, ermmm you're "old" I will agree, but Tokmi is valuable - she's antique hehe

Don't forget your honey now, you don't want to be pining for her like some people on an island kakaka

Zendra-Maria said...

Wow mekyam, that comment is a blog-post long - you are indeed on hypermode. And then cooking curry at midnight - itu dah terlajak europe and masuk time-zone india pulak HAHAHA!!!
Hey it's Saturday - you've no business to be doing business, go stretch those legs on the pedals - forget the oil, cycling's the better remedy and while at it you may want to think of a recipe which uses the grater which you should have bought in europe hehehe

mek-curmud you don't wanna become :D

Capt's Longhouse said...

Zendra,

,,,wow ! thanks for that honey come back song wow wow wow sebak yeop oii !!

I have been consuming madrasah honey from the tahfiz for almost two years now. My 'honey' likes it too :)

Hi Zendra, interesting conversation. Enjoyed reading.
I guess it makes me Jurassic now, ha ha.
My wife and I have been taking Bee Pollen tablets past 30 years....its supposed to slow down aging, gives energy, whatever, and so far so good....
and my wife gets mistaken for 40 very often too.

Thats the only tablet we take, one every morning before or after breakfast.
Hollywood actors, lots have been taking them....
Oh ya, and 5 cups of Chinese Green tea a day, average too.
You stay young and have fun, Lee.

Zendra-Maria said...

Hi Lee, Bee Pollen is it? Hmmmm... so that's how you guys keep yourselves buzzy *winks.winks* Honey, royal jelly, bee pollen, they are all good aren't they?

Anonymous said...

Dah berpuluh2 kali baca the benefits of honey, tapi still tak amalkan jugak. Recently bought a bottle of manukka honey... dah 2 bulan beli tapi can only remember taking it once! Aiyoo... got to start now lah... really... for sure this time...

Zendra-Maria said...

Hi Lady, i'm the same re the honey - intentions but no action - i think we do not have that sweet tooth lah. Pssst... Tokmi believes in raw egg kacau'd in honey - for newly weds especially or for older ones in a new abode *winks*
