PIN and Riddle

Alamak, I think Unker Tommy is right lah, he told me over at the Longhouse that I was starting to lose it.

I refused to agree with his statement but yesterday afternoon at the ATM I keyed in hubby's mobile no. as my PIN - of course it said "What's wrong with you - you keyed in the wrong pin number" or something to that effect.

Actually I was surprised I did that. I never ever use anybody's phone number for something so secret as an ATM PIN. My PIN is the same original random number the bank gave me umpteen years ago.

Well, I had no need for the PIN for about 4 weeks but today what used to be automatic became problematic. The blessed number simply left the building. No recollection at all.

I have cards for 2 other accounts at a different bank but they were useless yesterday because I had programmed  those to have that very same PIN - I mean why should I need to remember 3 different PINs, right or not?

Anyway for each card I gave 2 tries - each a different combination of the 6 digits I thought I remembered. To no avail. (3 wrong tries my card will get swallowed)

Went home feeling slightly dazed. It's really happening, isn't it? Can't remember something you've been using for decades. Instead remembering a number that I never had to consciously, and which is already tucked away in my phone memory.

"You're missing bapak kan?" said Syirah. I was going to get some cash to make the first payment on her driving lessons. "Eh, no lah, everyday we direct message on FB what..."

Whatever, today I'll try this number that's going round in my head right now - XXXXXX. I'm absolutely sure it has come back. Otherwise, I'll have to pop in at the banks with my passbooks and be re-issued with  new PINs. CIMB says they do it on the spot, but Maybank - not too sure lah. I know I have to pay a RM12 penalty for a new card.

Actually the chip on the Maybank card seem to get "rusty" very easily and some of the machines can't read them. People say in such cases to lightly scrape the rust away. Beats me why we have to pay for something of suspect quality.

As for my rusty memory.... hmmm now where did I put my kad pesara? Would need it for those government-subsidised memory-boosters, wouldn't I? Unless I start re-training the old box to use  associative memory-tricks.

Tu cangkul-cangkul lama belah pokok = ?

I remember once zaman muda-muda dulu. I wanted to go to the ATM to withdraw some money for myself. An office mate of mine who had so much work to do at the office, sought my favour to withdraw some money for her, gave me her ATM card, and told me her PIN. I didn't want to write the PIN anywhere, in case I lose the card & the PIN, so I memorised her 6-digit number. Takut lupa punya pasal, sepanjang jalan I dok memorise her PIN and when I got to the ATM I made sure I withdrew money for her first. Then I inserted my card to withdraw money for myself... and I totally forgot my own PIN! Cheh... so I ended up withdrawing money just for her, and none for myself!

Zendra,

Pi Bani, why you got the word verification "forti"? Cos you are so trustworthy like a fort OK? And also because of your strength and fortitude in doing what you do. Sampai over-ride your own concerns kakaka.

Please i want to entrust you with my new PIN in case I forget again, can?

Zendra-Maria said...

Name, rank and number, right Capt?

Trouble is I regarded my pin as MY service no. - pun boleh lenyap dari ingatan...

If I had been mugged at the ATM that day, I wouldn't have been able to w'draw money to save my own life! Scarey...

Zendra-Maria said...

Tommy, using birthdates is so guessable lah, but what makes you think you won't forget Ah Soh's and even your own birthday? Or even where you keep your birth-certificate when you need to check... hahaha

Zendra-Maria said...

mamasita, apa? true love? is that what they call sakit angau? dah tua-tua ni that's quite impossible lah hahaha

Anyway tidor memang lena because no one-man-orchestra to disturb my sleep :)

Pakmat, missus forgets her phone and you forget the missus - that's normal occurrence too. But back in days of yore, we did get by without those gadgets didn't we?

But storing pins under fictitious names? great idea that. Just don't forget those names then...

Capt, with what I've got left, I think I'll go practise at switching brain orientations at "No Tea and Scones" :)

Try to give some grace period. Later go back to the ATM and wallah! You never know, it will just come by automatically. Macam ada reflex gitu. It happened to me lots of time, meanwhile frustrated mengingatkan nya. Hope you get the sharp memory back.

Salam kanda dan selamat kembali. I guess your brain just need a bit longer to thaw from its frozen state. A momentary lapse of memory is a norm even at my midlife age. I got that too when having less sleep at night or my wive is away attending a week-long course for example.

errrr...BTW Kanda, do you still remember me?

Capt's Longhouse said...

Zendra,

Talking about being mugged, I remember this 2006 incident in S'wak after the rain forest music festival, i was driving back alone from Kuching to Miri and 3 x robbers blocked my Land Rover and I almost chopped off one of their bloody head with my Iban parang and all three begged for their lives after getting some kicks on their stupid heads. Guess it was more frightening for them three trying to rob a pirate on the lonely highway near lubok hantu.

Finally the admission after the denials!...

Once in while, I had commented ..didn't you remember this and that?.. and you had said how can I possibly would remember what's on your mind and unspoken at that!...

Now, who's been making it that it's always me who's been losing it...

Zendra-Maria said...

They have this 20 to 25 March festivities bigger than hari raya (still can't say the words yet in the local lingo) and they shut down with 5 days eating and drinking and.. to celebrate that it's springtime! OK so it's spring but surely they know temperatures still sub-zero and snow's still everywhere..if they say its now hari raya what can we Malaysians say, but hari raya it is!

zendra, nothing stressed me out more than having a long queue behind me at the atm machine. It makes me forget my pin numer. Dalam dok ingat-ingat xxxx and zsudenly it goes yyyy and i go all anxious and break out in sweat. lagi menggelabah macam curi card orang lain.

So, i'd rather withdraw money when there;s no one queueing.

Zendra-Maria said...

Kak Teh, so you withdraw from withdrawing when there's a queue behind you? I think there's a name for that kind of phobia hehe.

In my case, it was my number yang withdrew and is still in hiding, like a fugitive :(
