The One That Didn't Get Away

No. 3, Adeen, went fishing at a private pond in bangi and caught an ikan rohu. It was still wiggling when the picture was taken.

"I'll cook it if you clean it", said I

So he learned how to descale and gut a fish for the first time.

After a soak in tamarind juice, here it is marinated with salt, pepper and tumeric.

Coat with corn flour just before deep frying.

Out of the pond into the kuali.

When cooked to a golden brown, remove and leave for a while on kitchen paper to absorb excess oil. Arrange on serving dish.

Meanwhile prepare the sweet and sour sauce:
saute shallots, sliced onions, garlic, ginger, galangal, add thai chilli sauce and oyster sauce (agak-agak), chilli padi and chilli bangla, add some water and sugar, leave to boil, simmer, add freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice, thicken slightly with corn flour mixed with a little water, add quartered tomatoes, and coriander leaves.

Pour sauce on the fish.

To go with it, I whipped up a quick stir-fry of siew pak choy with beef slices .

Also had some seedless jambu air thai for cuci mulut.

So, how is it Adeen? OK?

A simple meal for three. But not sure where it is on the health scale.

Kak Ezza,

,,,am also very sorry for the biawak, it was my dog "Jane" that did the killing, sebab tu I skinned it for the meat but the bitch refused to eat it, so kasi ikan makan biawak-lah fair kan, selalu biawak makan ikan !!.

Tok Mee,
,,,sorry, you ada class type o.k.-o.k.-lah but I tell my strange story in OZ land down under back in 2004, I was there in July for the whole month with the family and on one of our drive for look/see we came acoss a kangeroo yang kena langar kereta, so I carried it aside for 1st Aid etc plus released her back after putting some ubat ubat on her face plus tail yang luka luka !. Not too bad, she was more in shock but the next day onwards I felt not too well myself and later flew back to M'sia, unfortunately my fever got worse, so kena ubat sendiri yet tak baik baik with high fever mah !!! Jumpa 2 x doc. also tak baik yoo..almost 1 x week. Lucky my golf kaki friends came over to kidnap me for a game and one of them also a doctor trained in OZ land, he checked me up and told me that i was bitten by kangeroo bug !!..ayoo yoo that bug came from the poor animal that I help carried across the road mah !!. So finally i got the proper medicine to help cure my stupid fever yoooo !!.
,,,So Tok Mee, you better berjaga jaga too in helping the big grasshopper in OZ land next time round ! hahaha.

Capt: I bet you can fashion a handbag from that biawak skin hehe

Tommy, they were out of kailan where I shopped. Eh don't you eat alligator meat too? Heard it has aphrodisiac properties - you might need it lah - with Gigi Lai hahaha watch out for the come-hither teeth :P

Zendra-Maria said...

Ezza ikan rohu tu ikan air tawar - i pun first time masak dan makan. Before that i bought ikan susu kat tesco, kata orang ikan susu tu cross-breed ikan rohu dan ikan jelawat. So depa ni kira serumpun lah gaknyer.

Amboi gelihati dengar Ezza bagi ultimatum kat hubby - itu baru snake... kalau yang berkaki dua camana???

NanaDJ said...

Zendra,
Thats good of your son to clean the fish. Am afraid my children are not that versatile, maybe because am not good at training them like you. So I end up being mum of all trade and slave of the family. Not good at all!

mamasita said...

Move over Chef Wan..here comes our very own Zendra..the Chef Queen for pond fishes!hehe
Masin airliur I..sedapnya your simple cooking for 3!

Zendra-Maria said...

NanaDJ, remember the saying about teaching a man to fish and he eats a lifetime? I think that should include cleaning a fish too hahaha. His future wife should thank me for it. You're versatile NanaDJ, so that's good heheh.

Zendra-Maria said...

mamasita, ikan keli goreng berlado is also one of my favourites as well as pecel lele, an indon keli dish yummm

Eh kena bebel dengan Chef Wan nanti you cakap camtu, I masak simple-simple utk family jer boleh, other than that surrender to Chef Wan kakaka

Capt's Longhouse said...

Zendre,
,,,ikan air tawar masak steam best sekali and senang makan sebab tulang tulang boleh di-asingkan easily once dah steam-kan. Kalau di-goreng its bones can be a hazard so be very careful when eating-lah.
,,,another hazard with fresh water fishes, is worms !! YES most fresh water-pond fish has ring worms and only if you properly cook them would you kill the worms but the danger is during preparations, the worms might get you ! hehehe..so pls de-worm the family every 6 x months too ...yaaaaky issh issh issh !! but don't watch what you shit out cas in most cases the worms would still be alive in the toilet bowl..they multiply pretty fast in the human body too..real fast/plenty by the hundreds yoo. Tell poor Adeen that most ponds are infested with tape worms too in M'sia cos. the public toilets are directly linked to them ! hehehe and am not kidding too.
,,,best fishing is still out at sea yaa, super clean salt water, normally almost 100% free of funny worms too !! do come over to Tok Uban Longhouse and we will bring him out fishing on ECBW foc on behalf of his Zebra/RED parents blogging kawan kawan mafia gang. hehehe !!. the ikan tenggeri can be 3 to 5 ft long each bwt 10 to 30 kg each Yeop oii !!..tak larat nak pikul naik bot se-orang diri. but its monsoon season right now, its too bloody dangerous, come in April to july best time for whatever-lah hehehe.

Zendra-Maria said...

Tok Uban, eeewwhh!!! Can't help but remember a certain wriggly episode when I was a kid hahaha.

mekyam said...

zee, looks delish. terliur abih!

congratters to angler adeen who by now is probably as accomplished at gutting/cleaning fish!

in matyankland, this skill ranks way up there with nifty plastic surgery. at least that's my subjective take on the reverent looks i get from the natives whenever they witness me cleaning fish from scratch. :D

Lee said...

Hi Zendra, wow! I'm impressed with your cooking of that fish.
Only a gourmet cook can rustle up something like that, and that smile on his face says it all.
"My mummy is the best"!
By the way, can see where he got his good looks from, *wink*...and I'm not meaning owner of the yellow Alfa Romeo, ha ha ha, just joke joke.

I love fishing, lakes, rivers, ponds, sea, legal or illegaly...but for some reason or other will take a pass on fresh water fish, except udang galas.
Prefer sea fish.

Zendra, does he have any ahemmm, classmates that study with him at home? Maybe with names like 'Pamela? Heh heh, Lee.

Naz in Norway said...

Dang! you've made me eat rice again at 12.40 (midnight)!!!

Zendra-Maria said...

Hi mekyam, fish-cleaning is a dying skill. In the supermarkets here, we get the fish cleaned for us foc. Also get them to belah belakang, filleted or butterfly cut - bet you know how to do these. I angkat tangan for this surgical manouvres hehe.

Zendra-Maria said...

Dear Lee, I'm only now taking to pond fish. Don't know why. Hope I don't breed a colony of those wriggly beings inside me as purported by that sea-farin' pirate up there.

Owh, that bedazzling smile? Comes from the alfanatic lah.

And its owner doesn't need to do homework anymore, fortunately. A 737 cockpit soon to be his office hehe. Hope to fly to NY on reduced rates then. Maybe pop in to Toronto after that *winks*

Hey Zen, in Oz it’s crocodile, in USA it’s the old alligator, in France, it’s Lacoste…hahaha. Saw Jaime Oliver hunt & cook an alligator in New Orleans in his new series. I will eat anything that Jaime serves out, I meant if a dish is properly prepared & served well presented, why not?

Frog legs, escargots etc..sounds disgusting but they r just like your normal chicken, beef, mutton etc..No lah, I cannot tahan those other ‘exotic’ meat (cooked for aphrodisaic purposes) they serves in some Asian countries, so blardy inhumane & some meat u r not supposed to eat, period.

Hoi Capt, I ‘steam’ a lot too, hahaha.….errr it’s much healthier way of cooking, especially with fresh fish. Either that or you season the bugger, wrap it in tin foil to BBQ or bake, great stuff.

Ya u nasib baik that kangaroo tick did not get into your ear. One of my acquaintances nearly died, kena stay in a hospital for a few weeks same symptom like yours.

Zee, if u ask Oldstock, he’s most likely to had visited Klinik GIGI LAI at Jalan Wong Ah Fook (opposite the old centre bus stand) in Johor Bahru for all his dental services in his younger days.

Cheers,

Tommy,

P/S – Did U checked ur poo-poo this morning for creepy crawlies?....hahaha

Aunty Zendra,
The fish dish looks yummy and the fisherman dishy...heheheh...no, the cat is not trying to flirt with your son. But since fish = catfood, I immediately take a liking to him. hmmm...the prospect of never ending supply of fresh fish... purrr...meow!

Tomcat-in-Perth, that's a very interesting name for a dental clinic. Very welcoming - gigi-gigi lai-lai-lai.

In PJ there's a CHIN EAR NOSE AND THROAT CLINIC. Chin specialist???

And then there's the BEE FATT 24 hrs restaurant. Take a detour.

Also a SHEESH MAHAL restaurant here in Subang. Take a detour.

And back in the days of yore, a famous newspaper columnist noticed on a street with many car workshops these signboards:
First one,
WEE KIAN FATT Motors
further along,
SOH KIAN WEE
and at the end of the street,
SOH HUAT

and your fave hongky heart-throb
E-KIN CHENG????

tongue-in-cheek hehe

Ooi that's noooo very nice lah, there is actually a Klinik gigi Lai run by a Dr Freddie Lai, go ask oldstock!

I tell u my chinese name & u go pengsan. It's Yew Ai Fook. U know how maksalleh place the surname last...hahaha..no offends. That's why I prefer u call me Tommy lah!!!

Red Alfa said...

Yo Tommy!

OMG your name reminds me of the old days of one of my first racy novels I had read called "Virgin Soldiers" (can't remember the author) which was set in 1950's Singapore.

I believe the author got a kick of finding a real Chinese name in Fook Yew. So every Chinese in Singapore the book's hero had come across which he found doing things disagreeable to British senses he called Fook Yews!

In another of his book, he had the same kick with a Chinese girl's name Pee Hai. I can't remember the story/tile of the book but many of my Chinese buddies then had hated my re-telling any part of the book about Pee Hais!

o.k. o.k. tellyouguys pilot jokes/stories, real one yaa ?..also for Adeen pilot to be or already mah!.
,,,After every flight, pilots fill out a form, called a gripe sheet which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems, document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight. Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humor. Here are some maintenance complaints submitted by pilots and the solutions recorded by maintenance engineers.
.
Pilot: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement.
Engineers: Almost replaced left inside main tire.

Pilot: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough.
Engineers: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft.

Pilot: Something loose in cockpit.
Engineers: Something tightened in cockpit.

Pilot: Dead bugs on windshield.
Engineers: Live bugs on back-order.

Pilot: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200 feet per minute descent.
Engineers: Cannot reproduce problem on ground.

Pilot: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear.
Engineers: Evidence removed.

Pilot: DME volume unbelievably loud.
Engineers: DME volume set to more believable level.

Pilot: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick.
Engineers: That's what friction locks are for.

Pilot: IFF inoperative in OFF mode.
Engineers: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode.

Pilot: Suspected crack in windshield.
Engineers: Suspect you're right.

Pilot: Number 3 engine missing.
Engineers: Engine found on right wing after brief search.

Pilot: Aircraft handles funny.
Engineers: Aircraft warned to straighten up, fly right, and be serious.

Pilot: Target radar hums.
Engineers: Reprogrammed target radar with lyrics.

Pilot: Mouse in cockpit.
Engineers: Cat installed.

Pilot: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer.
Engineers: Took hammer away from midget

Pilot; Tok Mee in cockpit
Engineers; Bekin Mee Goreng already !!. hahaha

Female Pilot: 2 men in cockpit making crude "chinese" jokes.

Engineers: Installed U-BAN Distractor

Zen and Tommy,

I seem to recall of a Klinik Gigi Lai at Jalan Ah Fook in JB. But I don't go there... my dentist is an elderly Punjabi doctor whose clinic is also on the same road. Let me check if Gigi Lai is still around :-)

Since you guys are on the subject of funny signboards, take a look at an old post of mine from August last year -> Funny restaurant

Oldstock, Ha Ha Ha Restoran - that tickles hehe

On the old trunk road going north somewhere in Perak (perhaps Tapah or Gopeng or Bidor) we never failed to laugh at a Restoran Tong Teik.... hahaha

And which is the best clinic for diarrhea - klinik Tan & Das obviously!!!

Zendra,
I love fresh water fish. Will try your recipe one day.
MAS has ceased to fly to New York. Mekyam will verify. AirAsia X may take over the route.
Tok Mee, when I was in Johor I used to be treated at Lai Dental Surgery in JB. I guess thats the one you are refrring too. In the 70's Dr. Lai was a respectable dentist in the country.

Zendra-Maria said...

Pak Zawi you're right, Mas has suspended its service to the Big Apple due to lack of demand. Well there are other places...
