Ignorant of the Signs

Today is the first day of normalcy after 3 days of the sniffles. Was traipsing about the house in socks and long-sleeves like it was somewhere cold like Australia. However that didn't stop me from going out when I needed to, where it was OK to go without a mask, in my condition.

And that was to the hospital to visit my biras, hubby's brother-in-law, who had fallen in the bathroom. The doctor's notes said "alleged" fall as if there was something sinister about it. Off course doctors are trained to write their notes like that. In Hollywood dramas, they say "sustained" a fall. But whatever.

My biras had suffered bleeding from the nose and ears but was alert and could move his limbs, according to the notes. He had been fasting and had vomitting episodes prior to the fall. He was a diabetic and had been for 17 years. Even had an ulcer on his big toe which seemed to have healed.

Saw his sugar readings. They had put him on insulin administered through a sliding-scale syringe. It was 4.6 upon admittance but had increased erratically 6+, 9+, 8+ even though on a fasting diet on doctor's orders. I thought that was strange because the readings were quite high. You'd have low sugar when on a fast, but what do I know. Hubby reckoned his body was in catabolism - using up muscle tissue to derive energy. Hmmm possible.

The notes said "alert" but I did not think he was when we were there. He was breathing hard. His eyes were glazed. He looked but did not see, I thought.

Why I'm writing this is because my biras passed away at 10 o'clock that night. We were there at visiting hours from 12 - 2pm. It's just that he was dying and I couldn't read the signs, in fact I did not know the signs. I thought he was going to pull through, Insha Allah. That was what I said to my sister-in-law and the two children who were there. They had tears in their eyes, they probably knew better than me.

But then he was not in the ICU and there were no labels that meant "No Resuscitation to be administered". This was something I learnt from a houseman in KK. They have such tags for terminal elderly patients.

My biras was 72. About the average life-span for Malaysian men. He was a very nice gentleman Abang Mahmood. He was never not smiling except on that hospital bed. But his time had come and it was through that fall. How I wished I had done more, like reciting Fatihas and zikrs for Abang Mahmood instead of poring over the medical notes, like I could make sense of them.

On the way home, Hubby had pondered about possible scenarios for bad endings and good endings to our lives. For Abang Mahmood, to me it was nothing but good. May his soul be amongst the Righteous.

Hubby and son went to the funeral the next morning 3rd September 2009, whilst I stayed home sniffling but was almost caught unkempt by an unexpected visitor, which........ is another story for another time.

Maaf Puan Zendra,

Saya doakan saudara puan diampuni dosa2nya dan dirahmati Allah.

Telah beberapa blog yg dikunjungi saya dimana terdapat cerita tentang sedara/kawan yg meninggal.

Seringkali kita membaca kawan2 meninggalkan laungan/perkataan "Alfatihah!" siap dengan exclamation mark lagi bila terdengar khabar si mati secara automatis.

Apakah mereka tahu apa maknanya? Apakah mereka tahu apa yg sampai kepada simati? Apakah mereka tahu apa2 tentang agama mereka sendiri?

Ruling on reciting al-Faatihah for the deceased
What is the ruling on reciting al-Faatihah and giving the reward for it to the deceased?

Praise be to Allaah.

There is no evidence (daleel) for reciting al-Faatihah or any other part of the Qur’aan and giving (the reward for) it to the deceased. We must not do that, because it was not narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) or his companions (may Allaah be pleased with them) did any such thing. It is prescribed to make du’aa’ for the dead Muslims and to give charity on their behalf by giving to the poor and needy. In this way a person may draw closer to Allaah and ask Him to give the reward for that to his father, mother or other people, deceased or alive. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When a man dies, all his deeds come to a halt apart from three: ongoing charity (sadaqah jaariyah), beneficial knowledge or a righteous child who will pray for him.”

And it was reported that a man said to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “O Messenger of Allaah, my mother has died and she did not make a will. I think that if she had spoken she would have given in charity. Will she be rewarded if I give in charity on her behalf?” He said, “Yes.” (Saheeh – agreed upon)

The same applies to Hajj and ‘umrah on behalf of the deceased and paying off his debts. All of these actions will benefit him, as was narrated in the shar’i daleel (evidence). But if the questioner is referring to treating the family of the deceased person kindly by giving them money or meat (i.e., food), there is nothing wrong with that if they are poor.

Jahil bukan maksud bodoh.

Salam Ms / Mr Anonymous,

Thank you for your enlightening comment, which I feel should be taken as a gentle reminder by everyone, as I'm certain you had meant it to be?

The fatwa that you quoted should be made known to more and though I only have a very, very small readership, I would rescue it from being buried in this comments section and move it to my main page as an entry by itself.

As for us ignorami, we meant well by offering Al Fatihah and did it with sincere intentions. Dare we hope for at least a tiny reward from the Almighty in this respect?

And may you be amply rewarded by Allah Ta'ala for sharing this knowledge. Ameen.

Capt Lonhouse,

tak ada niat sarcasm. mengapa kalau kita tegur benda yang betul, mesti kita tak suka?

wallahualam. Allah tahu niat kita masing-masing.

Maaf Puan Zendra. Hanya sekadar memberi contoh.

Ta'ziah di atas kematian. Semoga Allah mengampuni dosanya dan merahmatinya. Alfatihah!

Keras, self-righteous, holier than thou. Marilah kita terus begitu.

Yes Allah knows best, Sesama Muslim.

I've read or perhaps heard a tazkirah that Rasulullah SAW himself performed the so-called terawikh prayers only 3 times during his time, for fear that his followers will deem it mandatory.

One of his learned companions, later after Rasulullah's death started these prayers on a regular basis and they are are being carried out in most surau and masjids every Ramadan night everywhere today. If nothing, these congregatory prayers instills brotherhood/sisterhood amongst the Ummah - a reward in itself surely.

There are many other acts of worship that are considered innovation in this age but in my opinion, they are acts of worship nonetheless and we trust that Allah in his Wisdom accord rewards as to His own judgement.

Yes I've heard (but have not studied) that the Wahabbi school of thought are strongly against bid'ah in any form even those of the hasanah category.

To quote an Ustaz, many of us now are quick to demand daleels of just about anything but not too quick on the amalans themselves. I don't know, I'm not too quick on either one myself.

Thanks for sharing the links. Insya Allah I'll give them a read.

Salam,

Setiap kali perkara yg batil diserlahkan, setiap kali 'the bearer of truth" (bukan dari diri sendiri, tapi dari pandangan ulama sohor) ditembak mati.

MInta maaf banyak2.

Salam semua, readers yang dihormati,

I am taking anon 0509's comments as a personal reminder!

As reminders go, it hardly compared to some fierce admonishments I used to get from a Wahabbi and an anti-hadith extremist friends. Both are critical of each other but ironically both share the same mengkafirkan everyone else with regard to acts of innovations (i.e. amalan-amalan bida'ah).

Nevertheless, I am duly reminded that we should always and critically challenge all our amalan especially those handed to us by our "forefathers" separating the adat from the shariat as we should sieve the wheat from the chaff, as we would say.

As the views posed by Zendra and Anon 0609 have it, the jury is still out with regard to some of those bida'ah hasanah or otherwise!

May we are deserving by Allah SWT and may we shall always be guided in our niat and amalan! Al Fatihah!

Saya... said...

Zen,

If I may interject in this interesting turn of events, I would like to point out to Anon Alfaqir that what he/she said is not quite true.

See, even when our ulama nusantara (ie here in malaysia), come out with fatwas against yoga sebagai contoh and the dangers it poses to our basic aqidah, and they say it in a most neutral way possible, people STILL jump up and down when they hear the word HARAM. They will say "semua tak boleh", "extremist", "bukan niat kita puja Hindu idol pun" etc etc. (tapi tak sedar, pose tu memang worship pose...interesting to note, that Dr Maza, yg also dituduh Wahabi allows for yoga sebagai senaman, tetapi org hanya nampak apa yg mereka mahu...so in this case, Dr Maza gets praises sebab pendapat dia "sesuai" dengan KEHENDAK si liberal2 ni. Time lain, tak sesuai,Dr Maza mungkin dituduh WAHABIIII extremistttt! Hahaha...)

Even though the justifications/explanations have been given, ie: the poses themselves began as forms of worship and then slowly (disguised?) as exercise, the "holier than thous" and "mengkafirkan" screams began resonating from the liberals (Im also liberal, but I still respect my ulama, "wahhabi" or "nusantara" or "sunni") that the ulama were being oppressive and backward and hysterical over "nothing".

Aqidah is NOT nothing, Tapi manusia memang sebgitu. Tetap pertahankan sesuatu yg jelas salah, mungkin kerana for the sake of appearing acceptable to the West, sebab nak jugak buat yoga dah syok dan slim, dan amalan vogue, atau menjaga periuk nasik sendiri (ie the Yoga Queen who threatened to sue our ulama for that fatwa) Fatwas are important because we the unknowledgeable need guidelines on how to live our lives. Tak nak terima, sendiri tanggung, tapi jangan sampai sama-sama menyesatkan umat kita yg tak kuat aqidah. Therein lies the dangers of these "holier than thou" labels stuck on those ulama and those who try to point out the truths for all our sakes by the liberals or the rabid haters of "Wahhabis".

Tak dapat points atau fofular pun nak stick our necks out. Org benci lagi ade. Tapi demi pertahankan kesucian agama tercinta, these people do it anyway.

Ps: Red Alfa, anon time 0509 and 0609 hak mana nih? Tak jumpa pun time tu punya komen.

Saya, I was just wondering when you might come in with your take on this. I have yet to read Alfaqir's suggested links and so am not able to comment on the said fatwas. Too many things to do this morning like participating in some amalans at the mosque which may make Sesama Muslim jump in horror due to the innovation factor. Maybe I'm just so Mak Turut in these matters, ikut adat but knowing me, rather than spend my time in lagha activities I'm glad I had the strength to pull myself there this morning. And I do try to abide by the fatwas. I no longer want to attend Yoga after seeing in a book some poses are indeed very similar to movements in solat.

TQ for your input. Dah lama hang tak komen sini, nanti I pun merajuk hahahah

I acknowledge the good in the reminders and my position is to critically review the 'popular' amalans we have been performing and must find whether they are adat or shariat and act accordingly.
The comments and views as posted by sesama muslim and alfaqir here are points for reflection if not to be well taken in their respective contexts.

Astaghfirullah!
Terima kasih Sesama Islam kerana memberi pendapat, tetapi saya sentiasa memberi ingat diri saya bahawa Islam itu luas, pendapat itu berbagai, kita mestilah pertimbangkan setaip satu mengikut mutunya. Ulama kita zaman dulu bukan semuanya bodoh.
Wallahu a'lam.

"Kullu bidaatan dalalah, wakullu dalalatan finnaar."

Saya sendiri mengingatkan diri saya: "Semakin bertambah ilmuku, semakin sedar aku tentang kejahilanku." - Imam Ghazali.

Semoga Allah memberi kita hidayah.

"How I wished I had done more, like reciting Fatihas and zikrs for Abang Mahmood instead of poring over the medical notes, like I could make sense of them."

In my opinion you had indeed "done more" by reading the medical notes. And based on what you had written here, you had made enough sense to know that the doctor was most likely wrong with his diagnosis. Or maybe he was actually right when he examined arwah; only for the latter's condition to turn for the worse after that. Anyway, you had done your best to TRY understand what the situation was for Abang Mahmood by using what any reasonable minded person would have done. You had also gone another level by being observant of his condition then, and was brave enough to be critical of `an expert'.

zee, my deepest apologies, but...

while everyone thanks "Sesama Muslim" for his/her reminder, i'd like to thank him/her NOT to second-guess the niat of MY lafaz Al-Fatihah to arwah biras zendra.

p.s. capt longhouse, i totally understand where you were coming from, sir. and kt, i'm glad i'm not the only one who sensed the sneer in the second comment.

Tetapi sebagai menghormati Puan Zendra, akan saya "let it go".

maaf, itu tadi dari

"sesama Muslim"

Alfaqir,

Ladymarko, thanks. Bulan puasa bulan menguji kesabaran, agaknya itulah terjadinya perbincangan sedemikian rupa hehe

Hey, how did it go with the briyani@in-laws?

RedAlfa and I watched the mutton briyani demo on youtube and he was practically salivating when the chef tasted his dish. Now he wants me to cook it too. Did you find the saffron?

Zendra-Maria said...

Salam Mat Cendana, Actually I was just being a busy-body reading the notes and did not even think by doing that I was "doing more" hehe. You've cheered me up Mat, thanks so much for gracing my humble teratak. I'll pop by yours soon.

Capt. I survive on snatches of sleep nowadays. Sometimes feel like a zombie too. Keep up with your quranic quotes lah tapi kalau boleh provide the surah and ayat as well, so sesama kita boleh buat reference dan tandakan on the Quran. TQ :)

Aiit mekyam, dah lama tak singgah! Where have you been, ahli dari Nuyork? Wah macam ni mana lah kepala speaker tak pening, ingat tadi dah gulong perbahasan hahahah!

Thanks for the condolence wish too, mekyam. You take care now.

Hi Zee, wow very lively discussion here, and to think it all started with a sniffle & a funeral. And BTW; my deepest condolences to the family for your loss.

This is definitely the sign of our time, everyone’s so suspicious of one another, reading between the lines, what’s he/she up to, what’s their intention, etc…hmm so sad I tell u. Why can’t everyone be trustworthy of one another anymore? What happened to the good old sincere, honest to goodness “Apa khabar?” If only all of us face up to one another with pure intention without any suspicion, our lives will be so much calmer & serene (tranquility, for use of a much better word?). I had always given any strangers that I’d come in contact with, the benefit of the doubt, that their intention are sincere until proven otherwise. Then it’s just thanks but no thanks, u have a nice day & just walk away. Why lah go stress yourselves so unnecessarily. I’d always lived my life having my chin up, a clear conscience, without having to look over my shoulder.

And no, I don’t feel bad by pampering myself with my way of lifestyle, not overly luxurious but above average comfortable lah becoz I deserved it, I’d worked hard for it, and oh yes, I’m not leaving my kids any inheritance too (hahaha, they know that too), as I’d done my duties as a parent to provide them with all my love & had given them all the support they needed to get a good education & life skill to be law abiding & able to take care of themselves type of human beings.

People make the world go round and it’s perfectly alright to be different & have different opinions. The trouble is everyone wants to have the last word. Too much ego is a health hazard too.

Peace to everyone in this blessed month.

Tommy

P/S – And life’s not fair too! I’m sooo much better looking than your RA (hehehe) but I supposed you’ll say that he’s luckier coz he had u. Cie la vie!

Zendra-Maria said...

Lee, cannot use "Ah" kah? How about "Bang" then? Eh lagi cannot lah - that one exclusive for Red Alfa only.. hehe

Where was I when Canuck Casanova was handing out his resumes? Let's see .... in the cradle? hahaha naaah I was not THAT young, but not old enough yet for an MGB open-top. Lucky lah, if not I might have become one of those you loved and then left ... wow very lucky I was born many years later .... adoiii

Hello there Tommy, long time no see. Pergi makan angin kah?

Thanks for the condolences, too. Yeap this entry sparked a lively discussion - totally unprecedented on this facetious blog. All in a day's blogging, Tommy. Reminds me of when I had to manage people, have to make silat-like moves often, tepis sana tepis sini hahaha.

Nowadays people are more vocal when it comes to defending or preaching their respective beliefs, but as long they don't over-step the boundaries of decency and respect, then wars, hot or cold, simply cannot start. Just acknowledge the differences and agree to disagree, like what happened here.

Eh Tommy, no inheritance for your kids kah? Aiiyo, then the state gets all your wealth upon your demise, I presume. But then I bet you have given each of your kids some business to run, right? Kind of like teaching them to fish? I suppose you have got it all worked out. I'm just scared they send you to old folks home lah hehehe

Last but not least, as far as your looks go, the proof is in the pudding mate. E-mail me your pic and let me be the judge. Howzabout that?

Saya... said...

Zendra,

Tommy very secretive about his looks ever since I "met" him la...either he looks like Andy Lau or like Chua Soi Lek (both also have reason to hide)...he could even actually be your neighbour having some fun on the side ;) (dunno how he got the Perth IP tho...hmmmmm)

Don't angry ah, Tommy...put your profile pic up lah. Nice family pic. Now you very famous already meh, making the rounds at all the ladies blogs (you actually call us "MAKCIKS" in the other notorious blog ah...ceh!)

Zendra-Maria said...

Saya: Either he looks like James Bond or Michelin Man.

Or cross between the two

Hi Zee & Saya, (felt like v r having a ‘ménage a trois’, sorry no offence, just kidding. I tot Zee like French language),

Oh women oh women, sometimes curiosity get the better of u; ever went shopping & splashed on an expensive item on impulse that u end up having no use of it? Tell me about it, the missus got a cupboard full of them, still with their original labels & packaging in tag! Maybe some will worth a fortune today due to their antiquity value.

I’ll be doing a great disservice to all u ladies if I were to post my picture up. It’ll just like me staring at a picture of the Bugatti Veyron Fbg par Hermes i.e. u can see but can never touch / own…hahaha….Gee, sometimes I do hate myself for being so vain & conceited.

Old folks home??? Nah, semua sudah planned baik2, I’ll mortgage my house in due course, then check in full time in a Resort hotel to live the rest of my days; 24/7 concierge service, makan, laundry, entertainment etc all taken care of by the bank.

Hey Saya, ‘makcik’ is a term of endearment mah. I only frequent blogs of people that are reminiscence of my growing up years bosom buddies. Each & everyone of u remind me of someone special that had grace my childhood, macam mix & match. Like that notorious Kij & the infallible Matt, both geniuses in their own special way. And as for u ladies, I’ll let u go figure it out…hahaha.

Have a nice day.

Tommy Dukes (from Lady Chatterley’s Lover)

Zendra-Maria said...

OK Tommy be like that. Takda hal punya hehe. Maybe we should go back to calling you Unker lah - term of endearment mah...

You just discovered DH Lawrence, I see?

Salam madam.

News on sickness/death/people passed away has always made us grieving and touched deep in our heart. That is us, being human the mortal being.

Innalillahi wainna ilaihi rajiun. May Allah gives Abang Mahmood a special place among the Solehin. Al-fatihah.

Zendra-Maria said...

Thanks Dr Sam, death is but a reminder to us of the immortality of our jasads - any time any place - as determined by the Creator.

just a tiny reminder-lah,,,,ya??

,,,"Every soul shall have a taste of death; and only on the Day of Judgment shall you be paid your full recompense. Only he who is saved for from the Fire and admitted to the Garden will have attained the object (of Life); for the life of this world is but goods and chattels of deception."
Surah [3] Al'Imran 185

,,,Again, Al Fatihah for Abang Mahmood.

,,,Insha' Allah, we will help each other to appreciate/understand the Holy Qur'an vast treasure of Qur'nic interpretations.
Ameen.
